Military
spokesman, ex-BASL sec. face forgery charges over land deal
A former secretary of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka and a senior
Army colonel are to be indicted by the Attorney General's Department
for fraud.
Lawyer
Bandula Wijesinghe, former BASL Secretary, and Colonel Sumedha Perera,
military spokesman, are being accused of claiming through forged
documents a well-known philanthropist's land and ancestral home
that have been declared by the Archaeological Department as protected
property.
The
property originally owned by philanthropist and Kotte Urban Council's
first Mayor Donald Obeysekere was later transferred to one of his
sons, Alexander Obeysekere.
The
case relating to the alleged illegal acquisition was taken up before
the Colombo High Court on Friday before Judge Deepali Wijesundera.
Counsel for the accused told Court an appeal had been made to the
Attorney General's Department not to serve indictments on the three
accused in this case. The third was Sarath Wijewardena, former caretaker
of the property.
However,
The Sunday Times learns that the request was turned down by the
Solicitor General a day prior to the case being taken up. However,
defence counsel moved for further time on the grounds that no final
decision has been taken regarding his request. No objections were
raised by the State and the case was fixed for July 22.
It
has transpired that Colonel Perera together with caretaker Wijewardena
had claimed ownership to the property after allegedly producing
a Deed of Gift prepared by Attorney Wijesinghe.
The
Examiner of Questionable Documents (EQD) has filed a report in Courts,
saying the signature of Alexander Obeysekera had been forged. The
property extending over one and half acres with the ancestral home
of the Obeysekera family is situated off Rajagiriya in the Obeysekerapura
area. |
