Top
Govt. posts still to be filled
Top positions in government and semi-government organisations continued
to remain vacant seven weeks after the swearing in of the new Cabinet
mainly due to a complicated procedure being followed by the United
People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) government to make such appointments.
Important
organisations dealing with public affairs including the Water Board,
CWE and UDA are among them and in most cases only acting arrangements
have been made. In some of the institutions functions had been held
back.
In
keeping with an agreement between the SLFP and the JVP the government
has been trying to scrutinize all applications for such appointments
by a special committee. The move was aimed at keeping out politicians
getting involved in making such appointments.
In
some of the organisations where the chairmen have been appointed
the board of directors have not been appointed. Among the other
organisations where chairmen had not been appointed until Friday
are the State Timber Corporation, State Engineering Corporation,
State General Trading Co. Ltd., Tea Small Holdings Development Authority,
National Paper Ltd., Central Environmental Authority, Vocational
Training Authority, Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd.,
Industrial Development Board and the National Film Corporation.
Meanwhile
Mr. Norman Gunawardene has been appointed to the Airport and Aviation
Board of Directors. |
