Exporters affected by sanctions on Syria
US trade sanctions on Syria have caused temporary problems for Sri
Lankan exporters shipping tea to the Middle Eastern state as their
payments have been delayed.
However
tea brokers and bankers said the delays have had no appreciable
impact on the Colombo tea auctions as exporters have found other
ways of getting their payments.
"Sanctions
imposed by the US have caused delays in payments," a Bank of
Ceylon official said. The Syrians have found other ways of routing
funds such as doing business in euro or through European or other
banks.
In
addition, exporters have held talks with their banks and said they
had asked Syrian banks to channel export proceeds through European
banks not affected by US sanctions.
The
US imposed economic sanctions on Syria after long accusing the Arab
state of supporting terror and failing to stop militants entering
Iraq. |
