The
saints come together
By Marisa de Silva
‘Shades of Sound’ is a rare choral treat presented by
‘The Peterite Chorale’, ‘The Old Joes Choir’
and the ‘Choro Benedicte’ an evening of a wide variety
of choral music, on June 19 and 20, at 7 p.m. at the Lionel Wendt
Theatre. The brainchild of Manik Pereira, the concert is organised
by the Old Josephians Sports Club.
Over
the past decade these three choirs have each developed their own
unique style of singing, thus making this evening even more special.
The concert will start off with each choir performing individually
before coming together for the grand finale.
The
‘Choro Benedicte’, under the direction of Francis D’Almeida,
will open the concert with a rendition of the National Anthem in
four-part harmony. Well known oldies ‘Unchained Melody’
and Simon and Garfunkel’s ‘Scarborough Fair’ are
all part of the Old Ben Choir’s line up.
The
‘Old Joes Choir’ will be up next with their selection
ranging from Mozart to Queen, Elton John and other contemporary
artistes, sung in perfect choral harmony. The Old Joes Choir comprising
a 25- voice strong choir, trained by Deshan Cooray, is also backed
by a chamber ensemble.
‘The
Peterite Chorale’ takes the stage to entertain audiences with
their catchy tunes and harmonies. Their version of ‘Bring
Him Home’ from Les Miserables is tipped to keep music lovers
transfixed. The 40-member Chorale, directed by Stefan Corera, do
justice to numbers like ‘The Great Pretender’ and ‘Bye
Bye Blackbird’, with unique arrangements and harmonies.
The
exhilarating close will see the all three choirs combine to sing
numbers like ‘Climb Every Mountain’ and ‘La Mountanara’
with a lot of gusto and power. Their version of ‘The World
In Union’ will bring the show to a thrilling close. The concert
is sponsored by Brandix. The media sponsors are The Sunday Times
and ABC Radio Network. Tickets will be available at the Wendt from
June 10 onwards. |
