Soldier shoots sergeant and self
A soldier shot dead his senior officer and then shot himself in Kerathivu in Thenmarachchi, Jaffna on Friday evening. The soldier who had been punished by a sergeant for an offence, had written a letter saying that he could not tolerate the punishment and therefore decided to 'punish' him.

The soldier identified as R.M. Seneviratne from Medirigiriya had shot dead his immediate superior, Sergeant G.W. Liyanage from Medawachchiya. The sergeant was sleeping when the soldier used his service weapon, a T-56 to shoot him and then fired at himself with the same weapon.

Chavakachcheri Magistrate, P. Subramaniam had visited the scene and directed that the body be flown to Colombo for the postmortem.
