LTTE
continues to recruit children - UNICEF
By N. Dilshi Bhanu
Recruitment of children to the LTTE is continuing in the north with
more than 100 cases being reported to the UNICEF during the past
two months, a spokesman for the UN agency said.
"During
the past two months, the LTTE has recruited 124 children, mostly
from the Vavuniya District, but the total number may be higher.
Most of the children are in the age group of 14-16," UNICEF
spokesmen Geoffrey Keele said.
SLMM
representative Disa Fennboga said the LTTE was violating both the
ceasefire agreement and international laws. She pointed out that
the SLMM did not have powers to prevent the recruitment of underage
children, but was doing everything possible to stop it. |
