A meal with a view
Amalie Kvame Holm tries some Kandyan specials
Whether you're visiting Kandy during a holiday weekend or for the perahera next month, it's a lively city. The Sunday Times gives you some options on where to dine.

Devon on Dalada Veediya has been serving customers since 1977 and has expanded rapidly since with a hotel and several outlets. The main restaurant fills up at 8 a.m. with hungry Sri Lankans looking to have their breakfast in a nice setting. Service is efficient, prices are reasonable and the items on the menu offer great variety.

They offer both Sri Lankan and Continental breakfast, pasta, devilled dishes, chopsuey and sweet and sour items; salads, soups, hoppers, buriyani and several other rice dishes. There's a long list of rice and curries on offer.

Upstairs you'll find the Captain's Table, a restaurant offering both Chinese and Indian food, the latter made by Indian chefs. "We've also got a food court and a buffet of Sri Lankan, Western, Chinese and seafood," explains manager Dunil Wasantha. There's a bakery on the ground floor.

The Pub just across the street is popular among foreigners seeking an alternative to rice. There's a somewhat dark indoor dining area with air conditioning and a pleasant outdoor balcony where a crowd gathers for a drink in the evenings.

The menu offers a tempting selection of Western dishes but unfortunately, when you get your food after an hour or so you maybe sometimes disappointed as the food is far from authentic.

Twelve hours a day, Rams on Bennet Soysa Veediya dish up tasty Indian food in an amazing, intimate restaurant. Both the walls and the roof are colourfully painted and religious art decorates the walls. Although over-decorated it's a charming place, but note that you're not allowed to smoke due to the air-conditioning system.

At lunchtime you'll get thalis and dosas, the main menu offering biriyanis, vades, soups and Indian breads. Saffron Flower and Rose lassi are also on offer and you can finish off with Kulfi (Indian ice cream with spices and nuts).

Senani must be proud to boast of Kandy's best view as it's situated high up on Rajapihilla Mawatha. Mainly Chinese and Western food is on offer as also rice and curry and noodle dishes. We'd recommend their good rice dishes. There's also a special barbeque menu.

The History restaurant, located on Anagarika Dharmapala Mawatha, is the latest addition to the Kandyan dining scene. We visited on their opening night and were impressed by the elegant ambience. The theme is history and the cream coloured walls are decorated with black and white photos from 1860-1960. There's a big screen showing photos with an explanation of the date and the occasion, pleasant entertainment while you're waiting for the food.

The History restaurant is owned by Bake House Kandy that also owns The Pub. The complex consists of a bakery, a ballroom and also a show kitchen, the latter being the first one in Kandy according to general manager Asela Wavita. "This will be the first fine dining restaurant offering fusion food in Kandy and we've also got a show kitchen where any guest can come and see how the food is prepared," he says adding that they serve food from all over the world.

As a starter why don't you try Thai dancing shrimps? Or chicken wings marinated in Japanese Teriyaki sauce? Stuffed mozzarella triangles are another option.

The signature dish of the house is named History Ravioli and consists of homemade, two coloured ravioli served with sautéed mushrooms, tomatoes and fresh basil in a thick and creamy crab sauce.

History Special is a dish recommended by the chef. Green rice is served with your choice of devilled beef; chicken or pork with stir fried vegetables and fried egg. The menu is mouth-watering offering Mexican burritos, Spanish paella and several Thai dishes, Italian pasta, Indonesian Nasi goreng, vegetable kebabs and tandoori chicken.

Crème brule is a signature dessert but Bailey's cheese cake with strawberry sauce, White Amaretto mousse with chocolate sauce and Strawberry soufflé might also please your sweet tooth.

Even though the setting and the menu invite you to a fine dining experience the prices are still very reasonable. The service was both good and efficient but it might take some time before the food reaches the standard of the restaurant's ambience.

Flower Song Chinese Restaurant on Kotugodella Veediya is another option and so is White House Restaurant next to Devon.
