Gloom and doom for CH and FC
CR 32 CH 5
By Bernie Wijesekera
It was gloom and doom to the unbeaten CH&FC when they met their Waterloo at Longden Place last evening in their Caltex 'A' League match against CR&FC. The red shirts indulged in a superb display of rugby - 17 points in 15 minutes with the kick-off and ultimately won by 32 points (2 goals, 3 tries and a drop goal) to 5 (a try).

It was a comedy of errors by the Crescent Club. They made errors at every given turn, even forgot their basics. While poor ball handling saw them slipping their chances away, their lack of co-ordination saw them biting the dust finally.

Be it in defence the back division failed to tackle the marauding red shirt back-line. Taking advantage of the given opportunity CR and FC gave a delightful exhibition of running rugby where the entire back division was kept in motion.

In the CH last line, for full back Nalin Dissanayake it was one of his off days. The red shirts came for this match with a better game plan. They were fit and had abundant stamina and kept a ferocious pace. CH under pressure wilted.

CR playing this game before a big crowd and never let down their fans. In the third minute of play they scored, off a grubber in the in-goal area. Winger Wegodapola charged to touch down for an unconverted try. This was followed by another try in the tenth minute. CH won a scrum in the CH 25. The ball changed hands for full back Dinulk Wijeratne to form the over lap to run over. He took the kick but failed to arrow it.

The CH defence was in disarray. Dissanayake kicked in desperation for flanker Thalgampola to smother it, and charged to touch down. Wijeratne made no mistake 17-0 in 15 minutes., knocked the daylights out of CH.

Just before the short whistle CR won a scrum close to the CH line. No 8 Walpola broke, passed it to Dennis Mwanga, who ran over, Wijeratne made no mistake with the conversion 24-0 at the breather.

After the break, the red shirts continued their onslaught on the CH line.In the fourth minute hooker Viraj Prasantha went over for a pushover unconverted try. During the dying stages, CH winger Udayakumara scored their solitary try which went unconverted. With Kandy SC losing to the Army 20-19, all teams in the league have suffered defeats.
