Wesley
reign supreme
By Pelham Juriansz
It was one way traffic at Havelock Park as a rampant Wesley outfit
easily outdid their opponents Carey College to emerge winners by
39 points (2 goals, 5 tries) to 3 (1 penalty) in their inter school
1st XV rugby encounter at Havelock Park yesterday.
It
was virtually a no contest as the "double blue" lads ran
circles round their "red and blue" opponents. The forwards
had a good game and even though there were a few scuffles, the game
was played in a friendly spirit. The Wesleyites, however, thanks
to coach Nishantha Perera proved to be far superior in their tackling,
line-outs and even the scrums.
However,
it was Carey who drew first blood in the 10th minute when Mohamed
Kamal put over a penalty after an infringement in Wesley territory.
Carey led 3 nil. Henry Terrence then led Wesley's counter attack
to score a try, which was converted by N.Fareez to give Wesley the
lead (7-3).
From
then on it was no looking back for Wesley as they went on the rampage,
even though they played the game with just three of their regular
First XV players. Wesley's Y.Nonis was excellent in the line -outs
winning most of the throws with some superb jumping.
Just
before the short whistle Wesley scored again through the heavily
built Henry Terrence who scored a try once again to go to half time
12-3.
In
the 40th minute No:8 Harrison scored under the posts and Wesley
skipper R.Omar added the extra points. Wesley led 19-3. Thereafter
it was Wesley all the way with first Anura Priyantha who touched
down to make it 24-3, and then last year's skipper Kasun de Silva
scoring to make it 29-3. Skipper Omar's kick went awry.
Then
it was N.Wickramaratne who touched down far right to put Wesley
well in the driving seat and almost home and dry. Wesley led 34-3.
N.Wickramaratne added the final touches to what was an excellent
performance by the lads from Campbell Park to make it a formidable
39-3 victory in their favour.
Referee
Orville Fernando handled the game well despite a few skirmishes. |
