Mystery
of the missing weapon
CID detectives last week solved a mystery that has been bothering
both UPFA leaders and security top brass.
A
soldier attached to a VIP security unit lost his Chinese built T-56
assault rifle. He was arrested by the authorities and handed over
to the Military Police. The man who was under interrogation committed
suicide.
With
the weapon missing, the motive for the suicide became the subject
of a top level CID inquiry. A team conducted a detailed probe. CID
sources say they were successful in tracing the weapon. It had been
wrapped in polythene and buried in the compound of the soldier’s
home in a village in the North Central Province.
Detectives
believe the man, who had been heavily indebted, took the weapon
to carry out a robbery. However, when he changed his mind, he found
it difficult to bring the weapon back. There was so much security
around. So he buried it but could not account for the loss. |
