MP’s
aide still to appear before police
Despite assurances from former Deputy Minister Sagala Ratnayake
that he would produce before police his aide who allegedly assaulted
Lankadeepa Provincial Editor W.G. Gooneratne on Wednesday at a Teleshop
in Slave Island, the person has not turned up at the police so far.
The
assault took place when Mr. Gooneratne went to pay a telephone bill.
Journalist associations have condemned the incident.
The
Free Media Movement (FMM) condemned the alleged assault and also
wanted the parliamentarian to apologise to the journalist publicly
for blaming him using abusive language. The suspect had attacked
the journalist when he was asked to take his place in the queue
of SLT customers waiting to settle their bills.
"The
MP's aide was behind me in the queue and I saw an employee of the
Teleshop take the bill from him so that he could settle it without
standing in the queue. I protested and was verbally abused by the
MP. Later I was kicked by his aide twice", Mr. Gooneratne said. |
