Big
blaze at Govt. Press
By Santhush Fernando
A
major fire erupted at the warehouses of the Government Press last
night and fire engines from the Fire Brigade, the Air Force, the
Army and the port fought long and hard to bring it under control.
A
warehouse packed with printing chemicals and some inflammable material
was totally gutted but reports said millions of ballot papers for
the July 10 elections were safe because they had been removed the
day before.
Government
Printer Neville Nanayakkara said last night that the warehouse workers
had left around 5.45 p.m. and about half an hour later some workers
had spotted the fire. He said employees had worked hard to get most
of the gas cylinders, inflammable material and paper out of the
way, thus preventing a bigger disaster.
But
some workers complained that the Fire Brigade had come almost half
an hour after the fire was reported and they were short of water.
Water
was brought in from the Water Board while fire engines of the Air
force, Army and the Port also came in to battle the blaze, which
was brought under control by about 8 p.m. Police said the extent
of the damage was not yet clear while they had not ruled out sabotage. |
