Cops
in clash with HRC
By N. Dilshath Banu
Payagala police officers have allegedly abused three Human Rights
Commission officials who had inspected the quarters of the police
following allegations that the place was being used to torture suspects,
HRC director Nimal Punchihewa said.
HRC
officials had visited the Payagala police station last week, to
investigate allegations of torture in the barracks and kitchen.
The Sunday Times learns that this is the second time HRC officials
had been allegedly abused by the Payagala police officers. Earlier
this month, a similar incident had occurred and the officials had
complained to the Payagala police station.
But
this time the Human Rights Commission will refer this case to the
Supreme Court. Meanwhile, Kalutara Division SP Jayalath Kulathileka
said the barracks are the private residence of the police officers
and the Human Rights Commission should inform the officer-in-charge
before inspecting them. |
