Presidential
team hunting 'corrupt' UNF politicos
By Harinda Vidanage
President Kumaratunga has appointed a special committee to probe
allegations of misdeeds by former UNF ministers, Presidential sources
said.
The
committee includes UPFA politicians, government officials and members
of security establishments including the CID and the police. Among
those in the committee are Mangala Samaraweera, Mahindananda Aluthgamage,
Wimal Weerawansa and former secretary to the President K. Balapatabendi.
The committee which will meet every Wednesday at the President's
House will focus on exposing the misdeeds of former ministers prior
to the provincial council elections, the sources said.
Giving
reasons for the setting up of the committee, the sources said the
President was prompted to do so on the results of UPFA's post-general
election surveys that revealed that the people were more interested
in a new beginning and a government of action, than election promises
being fulfilled.
This
committee is linked to a new fact-finding sub-committee set up by
the Research, Information and Development unit (RID) that functions
under the supervision of Media Minister Mangala Samaraweera.
The
sources also said another sub-committee has been set up by the RID
to investigate allegations of corruption by government parliamentarians
and ministers as well. |
