Kottegoda
takes over Army from Thursday
Major General Shantha Kottegoda, to be promoted Lieutenant General,
will take over as Commander of the Sri Lanka Army on Thursday (July
1)
He
succeeds Lt. Gen. Lionel Balagalle who retires on Wednesday both
as Commander as well as Chief of Defence Staff (CDS).
Although
Navy Commander Daya Sandagiri, senior most among armed forces commanders,
was to be appointed CDS, President Chandrika Kumaratunga has decided
to place the matter on hold.
Hence
the post is to remain vacant until she decides whether it should
be filled by a retired Army officer or be rotated among the senior
most commanders as is the practice in the United States, India and
other countries. |
