Rahula
rumpus widens
The JVP has taken cover under Parliamentary privileges to defend
itself against allegations that one of its MPs got his son admitted
to a school in the southern province despite falling below the qualifying
marks at the Year Five scholarship exam.
JVP
General Secretary Tilvin Silva defended its party MP Premasiri Manage's
act of admitting his son to the Matara Rahula College saying it
had been exercised within the law using the 'parliamentary privileges'
of the MP. But investigations reveal that the member was not entitled
to such privilege of getting the child entered to school without
the required marks.
Mr.
Silva claimed that under parliamentary privileges MPs could admit
their children to any class between Year One and 13 to any suitable
school of their choice.
However,
Education Ministry officials told The Sunday Times the privilege
was given only to Year One admissions and did not give any privilege
to get a child admitted without the required marks.
Mr.
Manage got his child withdrawn from the school this week while other
officials including Ministry Secretary Tara de Mel are also being
implicated in the case. The JVP statement said that the MP had got
his son withdrawn from the school not because his action was wrong,
but because there was an unjustified campaign by sections of the
media. |
