ICC's
double standards! Howz Zat?
Sri Lanka captain Marvan Atapattu was forced to send a letter of
explanation to the ICC recently following comments made at an interview
with a leading cricket website.
When
asked by cricinfo whether the ICC should have stepped into the Zimbabwe
crisis, Atapattu was quoted saying, Well, possibly. What I feel
is that we should have been treated in the same way as Australia.
If they agreed to consider stepping in and canceling the test series
against Australia, then they should have done the same for us. I
feel the ICC could have considered stepping in earlier.
Marvan
Atapattu was only speaking his heart out and giving his candid opinion
on what the ICC should have done. In other words he was strongly
of the view that the ICC should have treated Sri Lanka in the same
way that the Australians were treated. In fact cricket fans in Sri
Lanka also held a similar view on the stance taken by the ICC. However
Atapattu's comments as expected did not go down well with the ICC
who demanded a letter of explanation from the Lankan skipper. Reluctantly
Atapattu agreed and is believed to have sent his explanation to
the ICC before he left to Australia.
As
much as the ICC has the right to demand an explanation from Marvan
Atapattu, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) should also demand reasons from
the ICC as to why they were treated in one way and the Australians
in another way. Why the double standards? Surely this is not Cricket!
