Hingurakgoda attack:
Elderly chief monk dies
The Hingurakgoda Bodhirukka-ramaya temple's chief incumbent
who was injured in a hand grenade attack on Thursday night, passed
away at the National Hospital yesterday.
The
elderly monk, Ven Kadigamuwe Sugathapala thera, passed
away last morning without regaining consciousness after a grenade
was lobbed into his room in the temple in Diyabubula by unidentified
persons, a hospital official said.
The
news of his death sparked protests from Hingurakgoda villagers
who demanded a full probe by the police. The villagers are to hold
a protest near the temple today.
The
grenade attack on the chief monk came three days after police found
14 members of the Karuna faction in the temple.
Investigators
said two novice monks and another resident monk, who had contested
the last general elections on the JHU ticket, were still missing
from the temple. The JHU monk is reported to be in Colombo
while it is alleged that the two novices have been given shelter
by a JVP MP in the area. |
