Duplicate
brand threatens Ambewela milk products
By Shelton Hettiarachchi
Following his visit to the Ambewela Milk Products factory in Nuwara
Eliya last week, Agriculture Minister Anura Dissanayake has appointed
a committee to look into the complaints of malpractice taking place
there.
The
Minister speaking at a news conference recently said the very existence
of the Ambewela Milk Products established with the main purpose
of uplifting the living standards of the upcountry farmers was threatened
after the detection of imported milk packets duplicating the wellknown
Highland brand name owned by the milk products factory.
He
said some 1300 metric tonnes of milk had been stockpiled at the
Ambewela milk factory after the former UNF Government imported milk
and released it to the local market disregarding the available stocks
of milk. Minister Dissananyake said that some 200 metric tonnes
of milk in packets bearing the duplicate brand name 'Highland' have
been seized from the market. He told the officials to re-sell them
as animal food.
The
Minister said that because of such malpractice the Ambewela milk
factory had to bear losses of more than Rs. 15 million. |
