Royal
College ended Ananda's unbeaten run when they outclassed last years
"B" division runners up by 39 (3 Goals, 3 Tries and 1
Penalty) to 5 (1 Try) in their Singer "A" division league
rugby match played at Royal Complex yesterday. At "Lemons"
the winners led 20-5.
The
star for Royal was none other than Shiham Bahudeen the senior national
player who was in cracking form both in defence and in attack. He
contributed no less than 24 points against the Ananda side who ran
out of ideas.
The
margin of victory by the Reid Avenue school would have been even
greater if not for some scrappy play by them early in the second
half where they missed almost two certain tries.
The
defending league champions had too much flair and power as they
ran in 3 unanswered tries late in the second half against a disappointing
Ananda side. The Royal outfit completely dominated the scrums and
line-outs and repeatedly punched gaping holes in the weaker Ananda
defence.
On
the other hand Ananda looked a yard slower and lethargic in their
approach. Royal drew first blood in the 5th minute of the game when
their full back obliged with an easy 25 meter penalty but Ananda
hit back soon through an unconverted try by Ransith Peiris to take
the Maradana school take an early lead 5-3. Sri Lanka centre Rajith
Jayasundera brushed aside few defenders to score far right to take
Royal into the lead 8-5. In the 25th minute of the game Danushka
went over a try through a forwards rush which also went unconverted
(13-5).
On
the stroke of the half time Bahudeen intercepted and ran almost
40 meters to score under the post and which was converted (20-5).
In the second half Royal went for three more tries of which two
were scored by the Bahudeen -Jayasundera combination to take the
Reid Avenue school for an easy 39-5 win.
