CR
& FC drub Police 58-3
By Bernie Wijesekera
It was running rugby at its best seen for a long time. CR&FC
beaten by Police in a nail-biting 24-23 in the first leg, gave a
scintillating performance last evening when they thrashed the blue
shirts by 58 points (5 goals, 4 tries and a penalty) to 3 (a penalty).
At lemons CR led 20-0.
The
red shirts had much to learn from their first leg defeat at the
Park, from the errors and did well to re-enact what works with a
better game plan. They did bounce back but the entire back division
was kept in motion. But in the end the red shirts won accolades
for their superb rugby display all-round. Both teams stood the test
of time with the kick off with their strong set of forwards.
CR
opened scoring with a penalty put over by Mushtaq. This was followed
by a try in the 20th minute with a dandy move, Fullback Mushtaq
joined the line for an unconverted try by the corner flag. Two minutes
later off a Zulki Hamid move, Haren Kaluarachchi scythed his way
for a try. Mushtaq added the extra points (15-0), Just before the
short whistle Mushtaq was injured and hobbled out. Dinuk Wijeratne
who manned the last line formed the overlap to score an unconverted
try (20-0), It was vintage rugby all the way. In the third minute
Roshan Perera scored, Rodrigo converted (27-0). Winger Ravindra
Wekodapola scored a corner flag try. Rodrigo converted (34-0). Then
followed Dennis the Menace special who ran over the line. Rodrigo
converted 41-0.
Police
scored their solitary three points off a penalty put over by fullback
Wijeweera (41-3, followed by an Asanka Rodrigo try (46-3). Then
substitute Roshan Pieris scored and he himself added the extra points
(53-3) and in the dying stages Wekadapola scored again to make it
58-3. Referee Aruna Udawelagedera controlled the game well. |
