Kingswood
drub S. Thomas'
Kingswood 20, S.Thomas' 0
By Aubrey Kuruppu
Kingswood scored an emphatic 20 points (1 goal, 2 tries, 1 drop
goal) to nil win over S. Thomas' at Bogambara last evening after
leading 5-0 at the break. It was a case of Kingswood's speedy back
division as against the superb defensive play of the Thomians. Whenever
the game was opened out, the home team showed a lot of thrust and
proved very dangerous indeed.
Kingswood
started off with a flourish launching wave after wave of unceasing
attacks. But in the 20th minute, their attacking instincts were
rewarded when winger Thilina Manif touched down after play swung
from right wing to left.
Just
on half time, fly-half Siriwardena, who had a very good game, made
a strong break but Kingswood stood firm on their line. Eranda Weerakkody
dropped a goal on resumption to take his team further ahead.
Kingswood
was gifted a try when a pass back to the full back in Thomian territory
went astray and Nuwan Bandara beat two despairing defenders to the
ball. Weerakkody, who otherwise had an off day with conversions,
obliged 15/0. Samarasinghe missed out on a 40 yard penalty for the
Thomians.
Namal
Rajapakse made a fine break and when challenged punted delicately.
The fiery Karthelis was there to catch the ball and carry it on.
However, the try was not allowed as the Thomian had stepped out
about 10 yards from the line.
The
Thomians switched tactics rather late and tried to use their forwards
more. These efforts were rewarded with a couple of five yard scrums.
But it was a case of thus far and no further.
Kingswood
scored against the run of play when the ball rolled loose in the
in goal area and Nuwan Bandara touched down again. Referee Chandima
Amadoru. Under 13 Kingswood 10, STC 0; Under 15 Kingswood 7, STC
0; Under 17 STC 7, Kingswood 5.
