Ratnapura schoolgirl clinches hurdles event

There were no surprises on the second day of the
82nd National Open Championships being held at the Sugathadasa Stadium.
But the highlight of the meet was the performance of schoolgirl
B.G. Lakshika Maduwanthi of Sumana Balika MV Ratnapura who won the
100m Hurdles event defeating an experience runner from the Army.
Maduwanthi had a timing of 15.16 secs while second placed U.K.I.
Umayangani was way behind with a timing of 15.94 secs.
Ten
finals were worked off for the day comprising of seven track events
and three field events. The 800 meters for men was won by J.M.H.
Sirfath of Lanka Lions while the women's category was won by D.H.M.
Priyadharshani of Army. The 200 meters for men went to Prasanna
Amarasekera of Army with E.M.P.S. Jayaratne taking the women;s event.
V.G.N. Tharanga of Lanka took the 110 meters hurdles event.
The
last track event for the day which was the 10,000 meters for women
saw two competitors from Air Force J.H.A.T.S. Jayasekera and R.M.A.M.
Ratnayake take the first and second place with Y.N.G. Kumari of
Navy following them. Of the three field events the Javelin Throw
was won by K.A.M.P. Silva of Navy with Sampath Weerasinghe of Sri
Lak AC taking the Triple Jump and M.I.R.P. Perera of Army bagging
the Pole Vault event. Today is the final day of the championship
with the main events for the day scheduled to be worked off 3.00
p.m. onwards. |
