Police
Commission acted too quickly says IGP
Following are Excerpts from the interview with the Inspector General
of Police:
Q: Were you personally aware that the list of prospective
candidates for promotion authorised by you and submitted to the
Police Commission contained the names of those with a dubious record
?
A. Yes.
Q:
Could you explain ?
A. What was asked of me was the list of officers based
on their seniority as according to the promotional scheme devised
by the commission, 50% of the vacancies were to be based on seniority.
I was not aware that the Commission would finalise the selections
for promotions of the top ranks (IP to CI) in two days.
I
was only familiar with the fact the Commission had been given a
court order to grant 450 promotions in the ranks of ASP, SP and
SSP. I was asked to provide details for these promotions and I was
also asked to give details of all the officers in line for promotions
which I did.
I
received the letter on June 26 and two days later I was informed
that promotions for the ranks of CI, ASP, SP (Grade II) had been
finalised.
Q:
Do you agree that the police data on the officers concerned was
backdated?
A. Yes. But this is because we have been pre-occupied with
paramilitary work and documentation had been neglected.
The police is not to be blamed for this. |
