S.
Thomas win at waterpolo
By Mahangu Weerasinghe
The Thomian Water Polo Team as expected, trounced traditional rivals
Royal College 3 to 1 in their NAASU 'A' League match on Friday.
Playing in RC waters, the away team made an early breakthrough via
a one-motion shot from the left corner by winger Dilshan Fernando.
The
Thomians held this one goal advantage right through to the third
quarter during which center Dakshitha Thamanegama scored via a break-off
to extend the Thomian lead to two.
However,
it was Captain Lasitha Perera who nailed the coffin shut for Royal
with another third quarter slam from seven meters out. Although
the Royalists, who were led by Nirosh Attanayake, fought valiantly
and made a number of attempts on goal, they proved to be no match
for Thomian goalie Zafar Zeinudeen who denied them consistently.
In
the end, excellent teamwork coupled with the experience of their
side helped the Thomians hold on to an easy win. The arch rivals
will meet once again in the water in October to battle it out for
the coveted Dr. R.L Hayman Trophy. |
