UniversityEnglish
teachers in token strike
The University English Instructors Association members will take
part in a token strike tomorrow. "Although the sub-committee
of the UGC met with us on August 10, our grievances have still not
been addressed," said Mrs. Rushira Kulasingham, Secretary of
the Association.
The
dispute stems from the UGC's withdrawal of a circular that gave
the English Instructors the right to apply for higher posts. "We
don't want to put students in a fix, but we have no choice but to
continue with this token strike," said Mrs. Kulasingham. She
further said the strike would be extended if they a decision was
not made soon. "It is ironic that English teachers are being
subjected to such injustice at a time when the Government is looking
to increase the standards of English in the whole country,"
she said. |
