Sopiyana Caldera donates all her
property to HelpAge to set up an Ayurveda Centre
By Sachie Fernando
There is a handful of people who practise generosity in today's
self-centred society. Sopiyana Caldera is one such rare person.
Miss Caldera has donated her house and 15-perch property in Kapuwadeniya
watta, Battaramulla to HelpAge for an Ayurvedic health care centre
to be set up in memory of her parents.
HelpAge
Sri Lanka is an approved charity dedicated to enhancing the quality
of life of the aged, irrespective of their religion, caste or race.
Mr. W. E. Wijewantha, an executive director of HelpAge Sri Lanka,
said they were very happy to receive Miss Caldera's gift. This would
be a further boost to their project of reviving the ayurveda system
in Sri Lanka."Today pharmacists sell western medicine at a
high price, even to the old. The government too doesn't help the
aged," Mr. Wijewantha said.
HelpAge
will work in collaboration with the Ayurveda Institute of the Colombo
University with the University supplying ayurveda specialists to
visit the centre once a week and hold clinics for patients free
of charge.
At
present Miss Caldera has no relatives to look after her, so HelpAge
has placed her in the Raigam Elders’ Home run by the Raigam
Korala Social Services Society. Well cared for, she is deeply content
that she was able to make her contribution to society. "The
people here treat me very well, I can live here happily," she
said smiling. |
