Royal
Colombo Golf Club 125 not out
It was a celebration of the occasion. The Royal Colombo Golf Club
commenced a week long calendar of events on August 15th with a spectacular
opening ceremony to mark its 125th Anniversary.
Heading
the list of guests was celebrity Harry McCaw former captain of the
Royal & Ancient Golf Club of Scotland. A galaxy of foreign representatives
from Royal and other clubs around the world were among the distinguished
guests.
The
highlights of the opening ceremony was a procession from the entrance
to the Club to the Main Hall featuring a bevy of Kandyan Dancers
and a troupe of drummers followed by Harry & Bright McCaw, Tita
& Jeane Nathanielsz, Kumar & Dushy Boralessa, Anne Captain,
Peter Hill, Hans Wijesuriya and the rest of the distinguished invitees
and members.
The
traditional oil lamp was superbly decorated and installed in the
middle of the hall and in the midst of a massive gathering and accompanied
by a session of drumming the oil lamp was lit by Harry McCaw, Tita
Nathanielsz, Kumar Boralessa, Anne Captain Peter Hill, Hans Wijesuriya,
Nandasena Perera & A.K. Ariyadasa.
The
official party then moved to the lawn for an impressive flag hoisting
ceremony and the playing of the National Anthem. Returning to the
main hall Kumar Boralessa made a smart and eloquent welcome address
and paid special tribute to Tita Nathanielsz for producing a magnificent
commemorative Coffee Table Book on the Club's 125 year story. Norman
Gunawardena in a witty speech launched the book after which there
were brisk sales.
Gifts
to the many visiting dignitaries were presented by Tita Nathanielsz
the President of the Royal Colombo and the previous captains of
the Club presented Long Service Awards to the Club's staff. Cocktails,
dinner & dancing sponsored by SriLankan Airlines followed completing
a terrific evening of conviviality and great fun.
The
fashion scene was classy Deshini Abeywardena, Anne Captain and Sophie
Delilkhan were smart and elegant. Zarani Rahim, Dharshini Sumanasekera
& June Boralessa made heads turn and stay turned. Nimal de Livera,
Mallika Jayasinghe & Marie de Silva were superbly draped in
gorgeous sarees & finally Rowena Macan Markar the vivacious
daughter of Alavi & Fareeda Macan-Marker looked absolutely stunning.
A great party, fabulously presented and most enjoyable. Thanks to
