Bradby
weekend was hectic in Kandy
By Aubrey Kuruppu
It was a hectic weekend in Kandy. Almost at every home there were
visitors from Colombo who had made their yearly trip to the hill
capital just to be a part of the happening of the year - the Bradby.
As
expected, the Royal seniors stamped their class once again when
they followed their 41-6 win in Colombo with another 10-nil win
to make it a historic 4-in-a-row.
However
Royal could not hold sway in all age groups as the young lads of
Trinity Collage won the Under 11 and 15 games. Royal took the under
13 while the under 17 game ended in a 10-all draw. However Trinity
won the C.N. Simithriarachchi Trophy as they had a superior points
tally of 33-10 in both legs.
Amidst
loud cheers the first to take the field were the under 11 lads for
their second leg clash. In this game the fleet-footed young Trinity
outfit ran on to score two tries to Royal’s nothing to win
the game by fourteen points to nil.
For
Trinity Bimsara Ranatunge and Yakdesh Ratwatte out ran the opponents
to score the two tries while Ratwatte added the extra points to
both tries. Veteran Anil Jayasinghe refereed this game.
The
under 13 game that followed went Royal’s way at 14-7. Here,
Duminda Attygalle and Dhanushka Weerakkody scored two tries, which
were converted by Mushin Faleel to give them fourteen points.
Akila
Dissanayake scored Tinity’s solitary try with Sharon Armstrong
converting it. Amila Gunasekera refereed the match. Not to be un-done
by the previous defeat, Trinity came back to win the under 15 game
by 10 points (2 tries) to no score.
Nigel
Ratwatte and Sashan Jayaratne scored the two unconverted tries for
Trinity. Gerald Rasiah refereed the match. Then came the under 17
match. Trinity won the first leg match by 23 points to nil in the
first leg in Colombo.
This
time Trinity in spite of playing in their own back yard could score
only 10 points with the aid of a try and a penalty conversion while
Royal were able to post two unconverted tries.
For
Trinity Bhuddika Seneviratne scored a try which went unconverted.
A while later Nishan Kirinde converted a penalty. Royal who played
a much-improved game to the one in Colombo ran in to score their
two tries through Manil Abeyratne and Jayashan Wijesinghe. Both
Tries were not converted. Mahesh Gunaratne refereed this match.
