Seabed
ghost that hit SLT’s cyberspace operations
Six days after a seabed cable was damaged, shutting down 800,000
Sri Lanka Telecom customers from cyberspace, the SLT that suffered
a loss of Rs. 500 million, is unable to collect the damages.
The
reason -- the SLT does not know who caused the damage. Initially,
the SLT accused an Indian vessel, MV State of Nagaland, of causing
the damage and went to courts seeking the detention of the vessel,
but three days later, it informed the Sri Lanka Navy that the vessel
could be released as SLT did not have sufficient evidence to prove
that the Indian ship was responsible for the damage.
Navy
Spokesman Jayantha Perera told The Sunday Times he had been informed
by SLT that it would be withdrawing the case due to lack of evidence.
By Friday, six days after the cable was damaged, Sri Lanka Telecom
announced that the internet and email services were restored.
