Over
3 million voters sans IDs
The administrative report of the Elections Commissioner released
in January has revealed that about 3.8 million voters are without
national identity cards yet.
According
to his report only 69% of the total number of registered voters
have received their national identity cards. The number of voters
claiming to have IDs according to information supplied in the voter
registration lists is only 9,077,430. The total number of registered
voters as at present stands at 12,899,032, which leaves a balance
of 3.8 million sans IDs.
The
majority of those who possess IDs are from the Colombo district.
This percentage is 83 according to the Commissioner's report. A
total of 80% possess IDs in the districts of Kalutara and Gampaha.
Vavuniya
has the least percentage of those having IDs which is 34% of the
registered number of voters while Trinco's figure is 59% and Anuradhapura
60%. Polonnaruwa has 4% more while Moneragala's figure is 61%. In
Batticaloa the percentage is 66 while in Matara and Digamadulla
69% of registered voters have IDs. |
