Lankan bar owner in Toronto killed
A 49-year-old Sri Lankan man was stabbed to death in the
bar he owned in Toronto, Canada on August 18 shortly before he was
to return home to reunite with his parents after an absence of a
year.
Pattiyage
Jayantha Peiris had been planning to return to Sri Lanka for six
months, to visit his parents, after gruelling 18-hour days for a
year, at a bar he bought less than a year ago, according to Canadian
newspaper reports.
However
this was not to be as he had been stabbed when he refused membership
of the bar to a group of unruly men who had demanded to be served.
The
reports said that Jayantha was remembered in a simple Buddhist service
with four monks performing the funeral rites, which was also attended
by Sri Lanka consul general C.S. Poolokasingham.
The
newspapers also quoted a family spokesman for Jayantha describing
the struggles immigrants face when trying to adapt to life in Canada.
Despite the hardships, Jayantha was a man full of hopes and ambition
who built a life in Canada, the reports added.
Four
persons have been arrested in connection with his death and charged
by the Toronto Police with second degree murder. |
