Twist to the hip hop beat
Three renowned DJs from different corners of the globe are ready to spin the discs for all those out-door party animals. Ishani Ranasinghe finds out more
Three excellent DJs mixing hip hop, techno and house tracks from dusk till dawn. A dazzling state of the art laser show. Looks like ‘Party in the Park’ is going to be one unforgettable night where the crowd will be mesmerised and partying all night long.

Presented by Mark Venture and Everything, the event brings together DJ Andrew from Singapore, DJ Chozie from Beijing and DJ Phil K from Australia, making this an event.

Last week we got to know a bit about DJ Phil from Australia and what to expect from him. This week we give an insight into two more first-rate DJs.

Named most popular Asian DJ over several years, Chozie has performed in places as far as London, Ibiza, New York and San Francisco. Born and raised in Sydney, Australia, Chozie cut his teeth on the decks at mega clubs and master minded the Asian-flavoured Yam Cha Cha parties that became the most innovative force on the Aussie dance circuit. He then turned his sights north, drawn by the Chinese half of his heritage and by a desire to be a leader in the newest revolution to overwhelm the Middle Kingdom – that of dance music. Thus, he spent two years in Beijing building up a following and turning the hearts and minds of the masses to the world of dance music.

Holding down a weekly headline slot at one of Taipei’s hottest clubs, Chozie has taken his performance to higher levels, generating a style that is immediately recognisable, refreshing and wholly unique. Admitting that it’s great to be a pioneer in Asia’s dance culture he assures that there is much more to come, “I want to continue pushing the boundaries of dance music culture in the region and make it more international.”

A peek into his DJ bag on any given night may reveal the funkiest of funky house, the most busted of break beats and progressive house with a few totally random hip-hop or funk classic thrown in for good measure.

Also lined up to mix the beats and help you with your partying is DJ Andrew. Having a liking for that Raw street groove and the ability to blend any groove together, DJ Andrew was brought up on a diet of old school Hip Hop, R’n’B, funk and soul. Admitting that it is a tough job to keep the crowd interested he says, “You always see a new generation of clubbers.” So it is with this ever changing taste of punters that his set has evolved and he has experimented with new styles.

Considered a true blue turntablist, they say he is quick to highlight his tricks on the decks, fusing elaborate scratching and swift transformations into the mix. Yet he maintains a secret love for the mellower, trip hop and chilled out down tempo beats, which he passionately lays down. Having diverse tastes, you can expect him to showcase this at Party in the Park, where he will be dropping everything from the slower hip hop grooves to more up tempo big beat and funky breaks.

With three sought after DJs who carry a trademark of being crowd pleasers lined up to perform, no doubt this will be one great party! Interested in partying to the sounds of some mind-blowing music? Then head down to the Nawam Mawatha Car Park on October 2 – that’s where it’s all happening! Tickets are priced at Rs. 500/- and are available at Glow, Limited Edition Crescat, Molly’s and Pro Sounds.
