De
Silva crowns Mahagastota celebrations
S.R. Pathiravithana reporting from Mahagastota
Trail Blazer Rohan de Silva proved that he is the
best when he rewrote history at the Mahagastota Hill climb with
a run that would be remembered for many years to come by those who
witnessed it to crown the their seventieth year celebrations yesterday.
Though
early morning showers threatened to be a spoiler, and delayed the
days proceedings by over two hours, De Silva driving his formula
Ford 1600 erased a nine year course record established by his arch
foe Suranjith Premadasa way back in 1995. Yesterday, Rohan de Silva
took only 35.57 seconds to finish the course in comparison to Suranjith
Premadasa's 1995 timing of 35.84 seconds.
However
the day's honours would have gone to Suranjith's son Aravinda Premadasa
in the SLA over 1600 cc & upto including 3500 CC event. In this
Aravinda Premadasa was engaged in a tit-for-tat battle with Nishan
Weerasooriya who registered a better timing in the first round.
But Aravinda came back in the second round to register a timing
of 36.63 secs. And this effort was the best for the day till Rohan
de Silva thought of doing something different.
The
other records established for the day came through the efforts of
Sheran Fernando driving his Citroen Saxo in the more than 8.0 kg/hp
upto and including 10.0 kg/hp event and in the SLN more than 6.0
kg/hp upto & including 8.0 kg/hp event created by Dinesh Jayawadena
in his Mobil Special car. |
