Caring
voices
By Marisa de Silva
AD (Anno Domini), together with Adlib, Flame, Devashrie De Silva,
Gajan Maheson, Kavitha Gunasekera and members of the El Latino Dance
Troupe join together in organising AD & Friends in Concert,
a fund raiser concert in aid of a musician in dire need of a kidney
transplant.
Playing
regularly at popular hangouts, AD has made a name for itself among
music lovers of all ages, mainly due to their wide range of music
and good rapport with the audience. Their exuberant lead singer
Prageeth Silva and Bass guitarist cum vocalist, Shehan Perera, have
the knack of getting the whole audience to get off their seats,
sway, clap and sing-along, shedding all their inhibitions, to just
‘rock’ with the band.
The
selection of music they’ve chosen to perform at this benefit
concert include all time favourites like “My Girl” by
the Temptations, “Lay Down Sally” by Eric Clapton and
two originals, namely “Saved”, a gospel number by Shehan
and “You’ve Been Warned” by Prageeth featuring
Gajan rapping. This particular number is currently played by certain
local radio stations as well, says Prageeth. A past winner of the
Show Boat Karaoke Championship, Devashrie and Kavitha too, will
be accompanied by AD in performing a few of their favourites.
Having
successfully held their debut solo concert recently, Adlib has established
itself as a vocal group, whose forte is acapella and harmony. This
six-member unit does all kinds of songs from some of the ‘greats’
from the Retro era, right up to the modern day. Some of these greats
include the likes of The Eagles, Boyz II Men and The Doobie Brothers,
whose songs suit the groups’ style and voices best.
Their
evening’s repertoire will feature both upbeat and slow classics
like, “Deep River Woman”, “Drift Away” and
“More Than Words”. Their characteristic traits of unique
music arrangements and perfect sync will no doubt keep the audience
enthralled as always. They will be backed by AD, who will also join
in on the vocals for some of the numbers.
Being
on the music scene for years now and grabbing the ‘Golden
Clef Award’ for Best Folk Band in 1994, Flame Unplugged need
no introduction. Playing at various popular haunts in the city,
they are well known for their versions of some of the best of artistes
and groups like Simon & Garfunkel, Bryan Adams and REM.
Since
their inception as a trio in 1989 Flame has maintained their consistent
sounds, soulful singing, which has drawn music lovers to their music,
over the years. They immediately put their audience at ease with
their soothing and relaxing blend of old and contemporary favourites.
The
El Latino Dance Troupe is also billed to entertain audiences with
a mix of jive, Latin and salsa moves. With a line up like this in
store for music enthusiasts, there’s no way you can go home
disappointed. AD & Friends in Concert is sure to be a blast!
When so many talented musicians come forward to support a fellow
comrade in need, they just can’t go wrong.
The
concert to be held on October 2 at the 36th Floor of the World Trade
Centre (WTC), from 7 p.m. onwards will be followed by cocktails
and DJ music. Tickets will be available at the Sponge Pastry Shop,
Kollupitiya, Deli-Market – WTC, MJB Records – 3rd Floor
Majestic City, and Pizza Hut -Union Place. |
