S.Thomas',
Ladies drown the rest
By Mahangu Weerasinghe
Water Polo behemoths S. Thomas' College set Colombo
waters afire yesterday when they pulled off twin wins against archrivals
Royal College at the 14th All Island Inter-School Water-Polo Tournament.
The
Thomian U-19 team, led by Lasitha Perera, went in to the game unbeaten.
Having lashed Royal 3 to 1 in a previous league match, the Mount
Lavinia boys were expected to record an easy win. This match however
proved to be more of a contest, with Royal managing to score two
goals off Supun Kulathilaka and Damitha Roziro.
The
Thomian forwards however were not to be outdone with Right Bar Lasitha
Perera and Center Forward Dilan Perera both making breakthroughs.
Dilan Perera in particular performed well, scoring goals in both
the first and last quarters. Another Thomian who proved his worth
was goalie Zafar Zeinudeen, who did well to rob Royal of a penalty.
Thanura Abeywardena tutored the seniors.
The
Thomian U-15 team proved to be cut from the same hide as their seniors
when they trounced their Royal counterparts 4 - 0 in the Junior
Game. Manjitha Thamangegama and Dharitha De Silva scored two goals
each. Lakshitha Kosgodage coached the side.
Both
teams will go in to October looking to make impressions at the Annual
R.L Hayman Encounter which will be held on the 21st and 29th of
the month. Defending champions Ladies College, led by Thanuja Fernando
secured the Girls U-19 title by beating rivals Visakha Vidyalya
3 - 2 in a thrilling finale. Isuri Beneregama, Madushi Selvakumar
and Nishanthi Piyasena shone by scoring for their school and helping
further cement the aquatic supremacy of their Alma Mater.
The
Sri Lanka Schools' Aquatic Sports Association in conjunction with
the Ministry of Education organized the Tournament.
