Another bus fare increase?

The Lanka Private Bus owners Association (LPBOA) warns of a further increase in bus fares before the year ends, as it expects another increase in diesel prices. In addition, the bus owners association looks forward to settling the fare anomalies with regard to distance.

Different fares per kilometre are charged on different bus routes for the same distance travelled. The problem of bus fare anomalies runs back to the 1950s.

However, no hike in the minimum fare of Rs. 4 is expected here. If the price of diesel goes up again, the minimum fare would be Rs. 5, with changes in other fares as well, LPBOA president Gemunu Wijeratne said.
