More
questions on Russian degree
The Director General of Health Services is to seek the opinion of
the Attorney-General to obtain an interpretation on the court ruling
given with regard to the Russian degree qualifications obtained
by the Assistant Medical Officers and Registered Medical Officers.
This
decision was arrived at the conclusion of discussions held with
Health Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva, the Sri Lanka Medical Council
and the GMOA.
The
Attorney-General's intervention is being sought at this juncture
after several reasons were given by the GMOA among which was that
the Sri Lanka Medical Council had failed to present the necessary
documents to court and Health Ministry representatives had not appeared
for the hearing, while the qualification obtained is alleged to
be a post-graduate one.
The
GMOA has stated that all registrations at the Sri Lanka Medical
Council would be suspended temporarily. The Sri Lanka Medical Council
on the other hand has decided to seek the advice of two President's
Counsel regarding this issue.
The
Sri Lanka Assistant Medical Officers and Registered Medical Officers
Association meanwhile said it is still discussing their future course
of action with regard to this controversial issue.
The
Supreme Court on September 23 this year, dismissed the two appeals
filed by the Sri Lanka Medical Council seeking to set aside the
Court of Appeal judgment directing the Council to recognize the
MD degree awarded to RMOs and AMOs by the St. Petersburg State Medical
Academy of Russia. |
