Tiger
demands delays peace talks: US Congressman
In a statement in the House of Representatives on October 7, regarding
the Sri Lankan situation, US Congressman James A. Leach said the
prospects for a resumption of the peace talks appeared bleak because
of the conditions set by the rebels, who were demanding sweeping
powers over law enforcement, tax collection, military affairs, administration
of foreign aid and other matters which were currently vested in
the central government.
Leach,
who is the chairman of the House International Relations Subcommittee
on East Asia and the Pacific, asserted the rebels were assassinating
members of their community who dared to advocate democratic change.
"In
practical terms, the LTTE's diktat means that Tamils who dare to
advocate democratic change, independently contest elections and
speak out against or actively oppose the Tigers will be targeted
for assassination".
He
added that the international community needed to consider additional
steps. |
