Go
back after coming back call to illegals in S. Korea

Labour Minister Athauda Seneviratne calls on illegal
migrants in South Korea to come back to Sri Lanka in order to create
more job opportunities in that country.
"There
are around 2000 Sri Lankan workers settled in Korea. There's no
way I could legalise their status unless they come back and then
we can send them as legal migrant workers" he said.
This
was stated by the minister after the South Korean Government offered
job opportunities for migrant workers in six countries, including
Sri Lanka, under the Employment Permit System (EPS).
Five
thousand five hundred screened applicants are expected to get jobs
in South Korea. It is also learnt that 4,900 employed will be recruited
for the manufacturing industry and 600 in the agriculture and livestock
sectors. The formal contract period under the EPS is one year. If
the employee is unable to find employment within one year, the names
of such employees will be automatically deleted. Employees could
work up to three years by renewing their contracts every year. After
the completion of three years, the workers should return to their
country and could reapply one year later for job opportunities in
Korea.
"Having
illegal migrant workers would be a hindrance to legal migrant workers
who are hoping to work in Korea," said the Director of the
Foreigners Employment Support Division in Korea Chu Kyung Hyum,
adding, " If the illegal migrant workers offer to leave voluntarily,
the Korean Government will grant permission to them to work in Korea
again as legal migrant workers." |
