Probe
soon on rising “grave crime”
By Chandani Kirinde
Parliament last week approved the setting up of a
select committee to look into the serious escalation of grave crime,
including murder, in every part of Sri Lanka.
No
members have been yet named to the committee for which approval
was given on Tuesday. The committee has been set up as it is evident
that grave crime is seriously escalating in every part of the country
during the past few years and the situation has seriously affected
the lifestyle of the common man.
The
matters that the select committee would look into include whether
it is necessary to identify and classify statistically the increase
in crime in Sri Lanka during the period January 1, 2000 to date,
what causes have influenced the increase in crime and whether any
omissions or negligence of duty by the relevant authorities including
the Police have taken place leading to such an increase.
The
select committee will also look into the fact whether certain discrepancies
in the present judicial system have influenced the increase in crime,
what short-term or long-term procedures should be taken with a view
to controlling crime and whether new legislation needs to be introduced
and existing legislation amended in this regard.
Once
members are nominated to the committee by the Speaker, it will have
the power to summon any person to appear before it and gather evidence,
written or oral, and also obtain the services of specialists in
the field and experts to assist it. The committee also has the power
to report from time to time to Parliament on its findings. |
