Tara
not paid for her advice after April
Education Secretary Tara de Mel does not draw any allowances as
a Presidential advisor, Senior Assistant Secretary to the President,
D. S. Gunaratne said.
Mr.
Gunaratne was referring to a news item in The Sunday Times last
week which said Dr. de Mel who advises the President on activities
connected with social infrastructure receives a monthly allowance
of Rs. 30,000 as well as a vehicle and 190 litres of diesel.
After
Dr. de Mel’s current appointment in the Education Ministry,
the President’s Office has not made any payment or allowances
to her, Mr. Gunaratne said.
However,
Dr. de Mel had been obtaining a monthly allowance of Rs. 30,000,
a vehicle, and 190 litres of fuel until April 17, 2004. A total
of Rs. 675,000 had been paid from the President's Office by that
time.
Our
reporter says the article last week was based on an answer given
to Parliament and recorded in Hansard, but the news item regrettably
did not point out that the monthly allowance paid to Dr. de Mel
from the President's Office ended in April when she assumed office
as Secretary to the Ministry of Education. |
