Pay
up or we pack up: JVP
By Santhush Fernando
The JVP is pushing for a salary increase of at least
Rs. 3,000 a month for public servants -- with a warning that it
might oppose the budget if this is not granted.
A
JVP politburo member who did not want to be named said that in proposals
for the budget, the JVP had recommended that the highest salary
increase be given to the lowest income groups in a bid to reduce
the income disparities.
They
said the party might even consider voting against the budget if
the proposed basic pay hike was not given or if other budget proposals
went against the interest of the common people. The UPFA in its
manifesto promised a salary increase of 70 percent within three
months and the JVP official said the alternative proposal was the
bare minimum they would settle for.
Meanwhile
JHU spokesman Udaya Gammanpila for the JHU said the party was submitting
its own proposals to the government and would support the budget
if those proposals were accepted. |
