‘Thomian
Quad’ brought them together
By Mahangu Weerasinghe
The four branches of S. Thomas' in came together
this weekend to celebrate their common heritage in sport. S. Thomas'
Preparatory School Kollupitiya, along with S. Thomas' Bandarawela
and S. Thomas' Gurutalawa met hosts S. Thomas' College Mount Lavinia
in what can be called the first venture of its kind.
Dubbed
the 'Thomian Quad', the event concentrated on the development of
sports within, and between the four schools. The sports at the centre
of the event this year were Athletics, Badminton, Basketball and
Soccer. All sports were competed according to age groups, ranging
from under - 13 to under - 19. Over four hundred and fifty Thomians
from all across the island took part in this historic event.
On
Friday evening, all participants gathered around a campfire that
was put together by the scouts of the four institutions as a celebration
of Thomian unity. Last night, a fellowship dinner and mini carnival
was held at the big club grounds at which many old boys and well-wishers
were present.
The
weekend event drew to a close this morning with a Communion Service
in Chapel of Transfiguration after which the participants sat down
for a traditional breakfast in the time honoured S. Thomas' College
dining hall. It is hoped that the 'Thomian Quad' will be the first
in a series of such endevours which will strengthen ties between
the schools.
In
the competition, the host school secured the Athletics, Basketball
and Badminton overall titles while S. Thomas' Bandarawela managed
to outdo their compatriots Gurutalawa in the finals to clinch the
Soccer title.
S.
Thomas' College Mount Lavinia thus secured The Bishop's Challenge
Trophy for the overall winners, with S. Thomas' Bandarawela bagging
second place. S. Thomas' Gurutalawa and S. Thomas' Kollupitiya were
placed third and fourth respectively. |
