Clubbed
and whipped, maid returns with multiple injuries
By Shane Seneviratne
A Sri Lankan housemaid has been admitted to the Kandy
Hospital after her return home from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia where she
was physically abused by her employers.
The
34-year-old Keerthilatha from Asigiriya returned after two years
with severe burn and cut injuries on her face and chest areas. She
told The Sunday Times that she received the burn injuries when her
boss' wife and daughter threw some kind of liquid on her body.
She
said she was whipped with a wire and beaten with a club by the two
women although her boss was a police officer. Keerthilatha's sister
Dodamwala Hemalatha said her sister made several complaints to the
job agency which found her the job, but little or no action was
taken. She said all what her sister got was US$ 931 as her salary
which she was paid in one cheque when she returned. After Keerthilatha
lodged a complaint with the Kandy police, the job agency owner was
taken in for questioning and Sub Inspector A.B. Weerasekera is carrying
out further investigations. |
