Wrong way to invite
An Army Colonel has come under probe on the orders of the Ministry of Defence after he sent a letter directly to his Commander-in-Chief, President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga.

The invitation, insiders say, was to invite her to come as chief guest for the opening of a swimming pool.

They say the Colonel failed to follow procedures in channelling such an invitation. That should have gone from the Commander of the Army.

Under JOH
Military Spokesman Brigadier Daya Ratnayake has been brought under the Joint Operations Headquarters (JOH) - what is easily the rightful place.

Although he was appointed Military Spokesman at the Operational Headquarters of the MoD, such an OP HQ does not exist.
It functioned only during times when a JOH was not in operation.

He will now be under the Chief of Defence Staff, Vice Admiral Daya Sandagiri. He also carries the title of Director of Army Media, an office that makes him spokesman for the Army too.

It is not clear whether he will continue in this office too or a fresh appointment will be made.
