Indu
casts his spell on Grimm’s fairy tale, The Frog Prince
By Esther Williams
Looking for an evening of laughter? Indu Dharmasena's
latest comedy - Gemba Prince to be staged at the Lionel Wendt from
November 19 to 21 promises plenty.
The
pantomime inspired by the Grimm brothers fairy tale The Frog Prince
deviates from the original with several modern twists that reveal
facets of human nature. "It's about people who make promises
they cannot keep; forcing people into doing things for selfish reasons
or using others," says Indu.
Five
centuries ago, the handsome prince Ram falls in love repeatedly
with the wrong women who use him for monetary gain, prompting him
to use state funds for his casual affairs. Soon the people revolt.
It is upto his two friends / advisors Babu and Rabu to find a solution.
Ram organises a proposal from the princess of the adjoining kingdom
whom Ram's kingdom is at war with in the hope of bringing about
peace and signs an MOU to this effect. Rabu on the other hand arranges
a stag party and by attending it, Ram violates the MOU. Powerful
Wizard Hell-Has-No-Fury casts a spell that turns Ram into a frog
and the advisors into crows.
After
living in a well for five centuries Ram agrees to seek freedom but
he needs to find true love to break the spell. "Which princess
in the 21st century would agree to sleeping with him, let him eat
from her plate and drink from her cup?"
