Thomas’ and St. Joseph’s
By M. Shamil Amit
The Under 12 cricket tournament
now in progress was affected by rain for the second successive week.
Most of the matches played had to be called off with only one side
batting. Of the matches that were completed there were no individual
performances that could be highlighted but it ended in easy wins
for Mahanama College Colombo, St. Thomas’ College Mt. Lavinia
and St. Joseph’s College Maradana.
Mahanama,
who was pitted against Sri Sumangala College Panadura had an easy
passage over their opponents. The Mahanama bowlers C.H. Jayasinghe
and B. Kalapuge with three wickets each and supported by C. Senanayake
bundled out the Sumangalians for 88 with only one batsman M. Weerakoon
being able to resist the bowlers making 23.
In
reply Mahanama spearheaded by an unbeaten 58 from Pasindu Peiris
beat the rain to make 103 for 3 and win the match convincingly.
The
Thomians playing in their home ground against St. Anthony’s
College Panadura, coasted to an innings and 67 runs victory. The
Antonians taking first lease of the wicket were helpless due to
some accurate bowling by M.D. Arasakulratne and G.V.S. de Silva
who took four scalps each. They were bowled out for a paltry 42.
The Thomians in their turn made merry to post a quickfire score
of 150 for 5 before declaring with two good knocks of 44 and 40
coming from R.G. Mathangaweera and S.N. Amarasuriya respectively.
The
Antonians going into bat the second time found Thomian bowler S.N.
Amarasuriya unplayable and folded again for just 41. Amarasuriya
following his 40 in the Thomian innings was the wrecker with figures
of 5 for 4 and he was well supported by M.C.S. de Silva who chipped
in with figures of three for three runs to give the Mt. Lavinia
youngsters an easy win.
Harischandra
National School Negombo, who in their earlier game recorded an upset
win over Royal found a tough customer in St. Joseph’s College
Maradana. The Josephians batting first, were restricted to 134 by
Dushmantha Chameera with four wickets for 20 and Ravindra Gayashan
taking two for 25.
Though
being restricted to 134, the Josephians, thanks to right arm off
spinner Nishane Perera were able to defend their score when they
bundled the Negombo youngsters for 75. Nishane ended with figures
of four for 24. He was supported by Ravin Perumal and Keshan Perera,
who had figures of three for two and two for 17.
S.
de S. Jayasinghe MMV Dehiwala, overcame Dharmapala College, Pannipitiya
in a thrilling encounter. It was a closely contested low scoring
game and a fine bowling spell of six for 20 runs by Dharmapalian
bowler K. Sameera but this could not prevent his side from losing.
Dharmapala electing to bat first scored 73 with Mohamed Ali and
Lahiru Chaturanga doing the damage taking four for 13 and three
for 12. S. de S. Jayasinghe MMV in their turn too found run scoring
tough but scraped through to overhaul their opponents score, scoring
