New
projects to end J'pura university hostel crisis
By Sachitra Mahendra
The Sri Jayewardenepura University hostel crisis
is expected to end with the introduction of several new projects
by the authorities.
One
such project is the merging of the existing hostels in one location.
Presently, additional students are lodged at separate housing schemes
composed of 14 houses with only 2 toilets.
Sri
Jayewardenepura University Vice Chancellor Prof. Chandima Wijebandara
told The Sunday Times that the authorities hoped the projects -
namely the Euro Lanka project and the Turnkey project - would solve
most of the existing problems.
The
Senaka Bandaranaike Committee will examine the cost estimated at
rupees four million for the first stage. University authorities
too are expected to further discuss these projects with Education
Ministry Secretary Dr. Tara de Mel.
Meanwhile
the Inter University Students Joint Commission (IUSJC) said the
hostel issue had prevailed for a long time without action being
taken.
"We hope the Vice Chancellor will take necessary steps to solve
this issue", an IUSJC representative said. |
