By Susitha R. Fernando
The Hindi film Veer-Zaara starring Shahruk Khan, Rani Mukherjee and Preity Zinta is now being screened at Savoy Wellawatte, Quinlan-Nugegoda and Sigiri, Katugastota.

The film directed by one of India’s leading filmmakers Yash Chopra who is noted for his earlier top hit “Dil To Pagal Hai”. Veer-Zaara marks the return of 74 years old Yash Chopra as a director after seven years and is produced by Aditya Chopra. The music is from the tunes of the late Madan Mohan.

The simultaneous worldwide release of the movie Veera -Zeera took place on November 12 with a record of 600 prints. On the theme of ‘love beyond borders’ Veer-Zaara is one of the few attempts to make a love story between an Indian man and a Pakistani girl. And it is to be screened at the 35th International Film Festival of India this month.

Squadron leader Veer Pratap Singh (Shahruk Khan) is a rescue pilot with the Indian Air Force. He risks his own life to save the lives of others. One day, on duty, he comes across a stranded Zaara (Preity Zinta) a girl from Pakistan. Zaara, a carefree, sprightly girl has come to India to fulfill her surrogate mother’s dying wish. She meets with a bus accident leaving her stranded in a foreign land. Veer saves her life... And his life is never the same again...

Twenty-two years later, Saamiya Siddiqui (Rani Mukherjee), a Pakistani lawyer on her first case, finds herself face-to-face with an ageing Veer Pratap Singh. He has languished in a Pakistan jail cell for 22 years and has not spoken to anyone all these years - and no one knows why.

Her mission is to discover the truth about Veer and see to it that justice is done. And thus starts her journey to unveil the truth. And the story now becomes more of a human drama and gets new life with the coming of the lawyer, determined to find Veer’s truth.

The movie begins like any other Bollywood movie flick with the slow love blossoming between Veer and Zaara after their accidental meeting as Veer goes about showing her his hometown Punjab and takes her to visit his uncle and aunt and who fostered him like their own son.

The film keeps the audience-interest alive with regular twists in the story - the sudden appearance of Zaara’s groom-to-be Raza who takes her back to Lahore. And then Veer flying to Pakistan to meet Zaara and confronting her in the presence of her entire family only to be turned down and later arrested on charges of spying and thrown into jail for 22 years.

Veer-Zeer a tale of love that grows with separation and deepens with sacrifice goes beyond a love and it also depicts a human drama in which the protagonist Veer is transmuted from a buoyant, chivalrous man in the first half into a silent prisoner languishing in Pakistani jails for years. The film also stars Amitabh Bachchan, Hema Malini and Manoj Bajpai.
